The Baltimore Times "Uplifting Minds II" Talent Competition takes place on
April 14, 2001 at Security Square Mall in Baltimore from 1-5 p.m. The talent
competition is for age 7-21 years and includes categories in music, art,
fashion and literature. The purpose of the event is to give young people a
chance to develop and showcase their skills in the arts. Talent from as far as Chicago will be competing before their peers and record
label executives. Matthew Knowles, manager of multi-platinum group Destiny's
Child is among the industry professionals scheduled to attend. Others will
include Jazz from Dru Hill; Kevin Peck, former manager of Dru Hill and
president of 410 Music; Jimmy Maynes, Sr. V.P. of A&R and R&B music for Jive
Records/NY (home of Mystical and Joe) and Kison Coppedge, director of A&R for
Epic Records (home of 3LW, Ruff Endz and Ginuwine). In addition to the competition there will be a professional showcase segment
and Baltimore's Ruff Endz will perform as will Jazz and Talib Kareem of
Imajin. There will also be artwork, fashion and literature on display.
Organizers say there will be opportunities throughout the event to network
with the industry professionals on hand. While you may have missed the deadline to participate in the April 14
competition, you still have one more opportunity on August 24 at Mondamwin
Mall from 4-8 p.m. Deadline for submitting entries is May 31, 2001. For more
